Postponed 2020 General Conference to Meet in Charlotte, North Carolina April 23 - May 3

Postponed 2020 General Conference to Meet in Charlotte, North Carolina April 23 - May 3

General Conference will begin with opening worship at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23. Lay and clergy delegates have travelled from across the country and around the world for the first in-person meeting of the General Conference since the special-called session in St. Louis in 2019.

Although it is being held in 2024, this is officially the postponed 2020 General Conference which was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

General Conference is the top policy-making body of The United Methodist Church. The assembly meets at the beginning of each quadrennium to consider revisions to church law, as well as adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy, and economic issues. It also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs for the next four years.

The East Ohio Conference delegation to General Conference has six lay and six clergy members. They and all delegates will serve on legislative committees during the first week of conference. Those committees consider submitted petitions and resolutions related to their particular area of expertise, determining which will be forwarded as legislation to be introduced, debated and acted upon by the General Conference beginning Monday, April 29.

Legislative Committees include: Church and Society, Conferences, Discipleship, Faith and Order, Financial Administration, General Administration, Global Ministries, Independent Commissions, Judicial Administration, Local Church, and Ordained Ministry.

Come Transform Lives with Us through
The United Methodist Church. #Be UMC.

“I am a United Methodist because I fell in love with the theology of grace. That is the one thing that attracted me to this denomination at the very beginning and has continued to nurture and develop my faith walk since then and is the reason that I stay a United Methodist,” said Rev. Jenny Whitmore, pastor of Ashland First UMC.

E-mail Brett Hetherington to schedule a time to record your 1- to 2-minute video sharing your story of how your life has been transformed through the ministries of The United Methodist Church.
