2008 Annual Conference Speakers Announced
“Lord, We Come to the Lakeshore” is the theme of the 39th
East Ohio Annual Conference. The annual meeting will be held June
16-19 at Lakeside.
Conference will begin with the Service of Holy Communion and
Remembrance with Bishop John L. Hopkins preaching. The Service of
Retirement and Commissioning will be held Monday evening. Bishop
Bruce Ough of the West Ohio Annual Conference will offer the
message during the Service for the Ordination of Elders and Deacons
on Tuesday evening.
Morning devotions will feature three speakers: Rev. Ashley Barker
of Real Life Community of Faith UMC on Tuesday; West Ohio Conference
Bishop Bruce Ough on Wednesday and Rev. Gary
Henderson, Executive Director of the Global Health Initiative on
Thursday.
Our Featured Speakers:
Rev. Ashley Barker, pastor of Real Life Community of Faith
United Methodist Church, will present the Tuesday morning sermon.
Barker, 25, is believed to be the youngest clergyperson to preach in
the 39-year history of East Ohio Annual Conference.
A native of Cadiz, Ohio, Barker holds a Master of Divinity from
Wesley Theological Seminary and a Master of Non-profit Management
that she earned simultaneously but at American University. She also
has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Malone College.
Bishop Bruce R. Ough is the resident Bishop of the Ohio West
Area of The United Methodist Church, where he is the spiritual
leader for more than 230,000 United Methodists in 1,188
congregations in 58 Ohio counties.
Prior to his election and consecration as a Bishop in July 2000, he
served as the senior pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, a
2,800-member congregation in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
A 1973 graduate of North Dakota State University, Bishop Ough
received the Master of Divinity degree from Garrett-Evangelical
Theological Seminary in 1978.
Rev. Gary Henderson is no stranger to the East Ohio Annual
Conference. Currently, he serves as the Executive Director of the
Global Health Initiative at United Methodist Communications in
Nashville. Prior to this appointment he served as pastor at Euclid
East Shore, Community of Living Hope and Lorain Wesley. He is a
member of the World Methodist Council and its Executive Committee,
former Conference Secretary of the East Ohio Annual Conference, and
served as chairperson of the East Ohio Conference Board of
Communications.
A native of Jackson, Mississippi and a graduate of Concordia College
in Moorhead, Minnesota, with a B.A. in Biology, Henderson studied at
the Interdenominational Theological Center, the Gammon Seminary in
Atlanta, where in 1986, he earned the Master of Divinity degree. |
