Elementary

Day Camp
Grades 1-3 in the fall of 2008
Seven sessions offered.  Go swimming, explore nature, sing songs, create art, and hear Bible stories with new friends.  A cookout, a wagon ride, canoeing, a creek hike, or a treasure hunt are some of the other activities your week may include!  Arrive at camp Monday through Friday at 9:00am and depart for home each day at 4:00pm.  Stay until 7:00pm on Friday for a camp-wide picnic dinner and closing program.  Lunch at camp is included each day.  A different theme will jazz up each week!  It’s the perfect introduction to camp.  Come to one session or all seven!

Discovery I and Discovery II
How can so much outdoor fun be packed into such a short time?  You’ll experience three days and two nights of hiking, swimming, singing, and exploring God’s world while getting to know new friends.  This is a great way for first-timers to get a taste of resident camp.  It’ll be over before you know it and you’ll want to come back for more!  Staying in cabins.

Hike, Bike and Canoe

Three adventures in one week!  Hike Camp Asbury’s trails, bike the Headwaters Trail, and canoe on the Upper Cuyahoga Scenic River.  Back at camp you’ll have plenty of time to do your favorite camp stuff.  Let the good times roll!

Young Artists
Grades 4-5 in the fall of 2008
Play with all the colors in your palette.  Experience different types of art each day.  Sketching, painting, ceramics, papermaking, jewelry making, basketry or weaving may be featured.  Develop new art skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.  There will be time for swimming, hiking, cooking out, learning about God, making new friends and all your favorite camp activities.  Experience God’s creation and make a few of your own.

Young Detectives
Grades 4-5 in the fall of 2008
Investigate Camp Asbury this summer!  Collect clues and crack codes in search of hidden treasures.  You’ll eat and sleep under-cover.  A cool “Mystery Dinner” is sure to be a hit.  While unlocking some of God’s great mysteries and making new friends, you might just discover something new about yourself!  You’ll have plenty of time for the camp stuff you love and expect.

Take your best shot this summer!  Spend one to two hours each day at Asbury’s archery range improving your archery skills.  Don’t expect to shoot apples off anyone’s head, but you’ll engage in some pretty neat archery contests at the range.  Test your skill in an archery tournament on Friday!  There will be plenty of time for all your favorite camp activities: swimming, hiking, cooking out, etc.

Hoot, Honk and Howl
Grades 4-5 in the fall of 2008
Who lives in that hollow tree?  What’s under that rock?  Some of the coolest plants and animals in northeast Ohio make their home at Camp Asbury.  While exploring God’s awesome creation with Camp Asbury’s summer naturalist, you and your fellow campers will identify aquatic life in Eagle Creek, learn the art of tracking animals, and much more!  There will also be plenty of time for traditional camp activities.  The beauty of God’s creation is sure to inspire you.

Younger Youth

Pioneer Programs:
Small group camping at its finest!  Connect with God and with one another.  Establish your home in the woods as a group, and then explore all of the nooks and crannies of Camp Asbury.  Together experience all the big-kid toys Camp Asbury has to offer.  You’ll shout and you’ll laugh and you’ll sing together.  As you kick back around an evening campfire, you’ll realize you’re having the time of your life.

Pioneer activities may include: archery, art, Bible study, bouldering wall, campfires, canoeing, cookouts, disc golf, giant swing, high ropes, low ropes, mud-slide, nature study, night hikes, orienteering, singing, sleep-outs, star-gazing, swimming, wagon ride, and worship.

Pioneer Adventure
Grades 6-7 in the fall of 2008
You’ll love all the Pioneer activities!  This is the program that put Camp Asbury on the map.  No wonder your parents’ parents fell in love with this place.  This is what “Camp” is all about.  Your week will breeze by.  Remember to bring enough throwaway clothes and shoes for Asbury’s legendary mudslide.  You’ll also slosh down Eagle Creek and cool off in Asbury’s “quicksand”.

Pioneer Plus Paddle

It’s A Mystery

What’s going on at Camp Asbury this summer?  You and your fellow campers will be “puzzled” all week.  Your answers will unlock a big mystery!  A “Mystery Dinner” will involve you in some pretty fancy detective work.  There will be some time for private investigation—you may discover some new things about yourself.  We’ve got questions.  Do you have the answers?

More Than Muggles
Grades 6-7 in the fall of 2008
Are you proud to be a Muggle?  Then this is the camp for you!  You’ll explore the world of Harry Potter through books and movies on the big screen!  Your evenings will be spent relaxing in the comfort of your retreat center.  Muggles will also take time to talk about the similarities and differences between a Christ-centered life and life in the imaginary world of R. K. Rowling.  This week even includes Asbury’s own version of Quidditch!
Note: Reading the Harry Potter books prior to attending camp is advised.  Come prepared to discuss characters and plots and compare them with Biblical stories.

NEW! Rock O’ Ages—Age O’ Rocks
Grades 6-7 in the fall of 2008
Camp Asbury’s rocks and minerals have stories to tell. When was Asbury in the deep freeze? When was Asbury under water? Each day you will do some hands-on outdoor fieldwork and participate in basic geology activities. You’ll explore the bedrock of your faith and rock-on with favorite camp activities. A local field trip may be included.

Can You Dig It?
Grades 6-7 in the fall of 2008
Uncover mysteries of the past!  While at Asbury, you’ll get to be an amateur archeologist.  Dig to find buried objects, sketch discoveries, and determine what objects are and what they were used for.  The week includes a “research trip” to a cemetery.  In the evenings, you’ll head to your rustic “base camp” to relax with your fellow diggers.  There will be time for the outdoor camp activities you love.

Art Camp

Get your creative juices flowing.  Try your hand at visual, ceramic, and textile arts.  Spend the week doing cool hands-on art projects with Camp Asbury’s art specialist.  Find your inspiration in the beauty of God’s world.  At week’s end you’ll go home with a couple major projects to show off.  God has placed the gift of creativity inside each one of us.  There will be time for the outdoor camp activities you love.

Space Week

They don’t call Ohio “the Birthplace of Aviation” for nothing.  In the spirit of the Wright Brothers put your dreams of flight and space travel into action.  You'll have fun doing self-directed engineering projects and designing experimental vehicles. Learn how wings give lift. Explore a variety of propulsion systems. Build and launch compressed air and solid fuel model rockets.   On a starry night, explore distant worlds.  Staying in modern retreat center.

A Taste Of Backpacking

Grades 7-8 in the fall of 2008
This is a great entry-level backpack trip!  Learn how to pack, what to pack, and what to do once you get it all together.  Now that you’ve learned that, head out on the trails of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands.  Spend 3 days backpacking in God’s amazing creation.  Sleep in tents or trail shelters.

Eat and sleep with your mountain bike. Get around camp and challenge Asbury’s trails with pedal power. Learn basic bike maintenance. Your group will plan an appropriate off-site ride. Wrap up the week with your best time on Asbury’s course. No prior mountain bike experience required. Bring your own mountain bike and helmet in good working order. (Asbury does have several mountain bikes to rent @ $50 for the week).

Water Week

Cast Iron Chef

This camp has all the ingredients for one great week!  You’ll receive a daily cooking lesson and a special ingredient.  Then go to work.  Whip up the finest in campfire cuisine.  Impress the distinguished panel of judges at Epworth kitchen stadium.  You’ll learn to bake bread in an outdoor oven for Asbury’s Thursday evening communion.  Take home your favorite recipes and try them out on your family.  Bon Appetit!

West Virginia Backpack

Not for the meek or mild.  This is a healthy dose of “home on your back”.  Refine your outdoor skills and learn new skills as well.  Spend four days backpacking in the majestic Potomac Highlands of West Virginia.  Share the experience of God’s presence as you climb a high peak or hike beside a cascading mountain stream.

Monkeyin’ Around
Grades 10-12 in the fall of 2008
Hang out swaying in the trees.  Master the elements of Camp Asbury’s ropes courses.  Catch big air on Asbury’s Giant Swing.  Learn what it takes to guide and encourage others on the ropes courses.  You’ll learn how to tie climbing knots, how to “process” a group experience, and how to belay.  Your week will include special challenges designed by Camp Asbury’s ropes director.  Spend a portion of each day on the ropes courses, kick back in the evening at your rustic campsite.  You will find yourself up in the air—a lot.  Take a deep breath.  You can do it!

Algonquin Canoe

Grades 10-Grad in the fall of 2008
Ten day extended-trip.  Experience the world from a canoe.  For centuries canoes provided the primary transportation for Native Americans and fur traders.  Hear the laugh of the loon; smell the aroma of fir and spruce.  Portages are a necessary part of the trip.  Arrive at camp on Wednesday afternoon.  After spending your first evening at Camp Asbury preparing for your journey, you’ll travel by van to Algonquin Provincial Park in Eastern Ontario, Canada. Spend six memorable days flat-water canoeing and wilderness camping. Bon Voyage!

Counselor In Training

Grow as a skilled Christian leader. God’s Spirit has equipped you; Camp Asbury staff will train you. Candidates for Asbury’s Counselor in Training program must have approval of the camp director prior to registering. Call Rev. William Graham at 330-569-3171 for an application. Prior camp experience is preferred. Certified Counselors in Training may be invited to volunteer for a week or more of camp later in the summer. As a trained leader and role model you will make a positive difference in the lives of younger campers.

NEW!  Outdoor Skillz - CIT Part 2

Grades 11-Grad in the fall of 2008
Sharpen your outdoor living skills so that you can lead others. Train in fire building, cooking, land navigation, tool craft, knots, equipment, leave no trace, and trip leadership. At week’s end your skill level will be assessed and you will receive certification. Open to campers who just want to improve their outdoor skills and to CIT’s who have already completed Asbury’s CIT program.
Note: Primitive camping, no electricity, requires sturdy shoes for all the walking you’ll do.

Family and Weekends

Family Canoe

All Ages
Campers, here’s your opportunity to bring your whole family back to camp for more fun. Many programmed activities, yet plenty of time for your family to spend time together for self-directed activities, too. Half of Saturday will be spent canoeing a scenic seven-mile stretch of the upper Cuyahoga River. Families will also have the option of bike riding on Portage County’s Headwaters Trail, directly accessible from Camp Asbury. Enjoy an outdoor supper, sing around a campfire, and stretch your senses on a night hike. Sunday worship outdoors. Be refreshed by God’s creative power. Accommodation choices: Retreat Center room, cabin, or tent camping.
Note: Five meals provided: Saturday breakfast through Sunday lunch. Complete the Family Registration form. Bring your own bikes and approved helmets for the Headwater trail.
