East Ohio Conference
Board of Ordained Ministry
Seminary General and Ethnic Minority Grants

The Ministerial Education Fund of the UMC makes it possible for the East Ohio Conference Board of Ordained Ministry to offer financial support through grants to our candidates for ministry. The grants are made to persons pursuing ordination in East Ohio Conference as Elder or Deacon. There are two types of grants.

  • General Grant: In both the fall and spring up to $1000.00 is available to full time seminary students who have been certified by their District as candidates for ministry. This form of aid is a grant and not a loan. Part-time students receive grants of $500.00. Please use the Seminary Grant Request form.

  • Ethnic Minority Grant: There is an additional $500.00 supplemental grant for both fall and spring available to full-time ethnic minority students, whether they are certified candidates or not. Part-time students receive $250.00. This form of aid is a grant and not a loan. Please use the Seminary Grant Request form.

This grant is also available to ethnic minority undergraduate pre-theological students who are not yet in seminary. If you are an ethnic minority college student, please use the Ethnic Minority College Grant form.

Applications are processed as received. The application should be received by the Grant and Scholarship Chairperson no later than October 1st for fall and February 1st for spring. Contact the Chairperson if you are unable to meet this deadline but are eligible for an award.

Seminary students applying for grants must attend a theological seminary that is fully accredited by the University Senate and be enrolled in an M.Div. program for elder track, or enrolled in a seminary program for ordained Deacon

Ethnic minority students who are undergraduates must be enrolled at a college or university that is fully accredited. To receive this aid students must be recommended either by the applicant’s District Superintendent or the District Committee on Ordained Ministry where they hold their relationship.

All persons receiving grants must advise the Grant and Scholarship Chairperson immediately if there is any change in their status as full time or part time student, in their college or seminary, in their address, or in their intent to pursue ordination in East Ohio Conference.
