Listen Up!
We begin speaking to our children while they are still in the womb. In their formative years they listen to us and hang on our every word. When they become teenagers, our children HEAR us but don’t really LISTEN to what we have to say. Sound familiar?
The irony is we have the same relationship with God, don’t we? He speaks to us but oftentimes we don’t listen because he might say something we don’t want to hear.
For the past seven and a half years I spent eight hours a day listening simultaneously to fourteen police/fire scanners. My job as assignment editor at Fox 8 was to find breaking news and then make sure I had a crew(s) ready to cover the event. The noise of the scanners could be deafening but it also made my ears more sensitive. The slightest sounds became heightened.
It was with this new heightened sense that I heard God speak to me this summer. It was time to leave the secular world and work for Him. There are better stories to be told and He wanted me to share them. As Director of Communications for the East Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church I will have the opportunity to spread the word of God. Each time we tell His story we increase the flock. It’s not always easy but it is the most rewarding work we will ever do.
I am a life-long Methodist but I still didn’t always listen to God. I know I am not alone. I’ve shared my story with you now please share yours with me. How has God changed your life? Send me an email at wolcott@eocumc.com. I look forward to hearing from, meeting and working with you. God is amazing and through Him all things are possible.
