The Bishop’s Taskforce on Public Education was formed in the fall of 2005 as a follow-up to Bishop Hopkins’ first Episcopal Address at Lakeside in June of 2005. Its purpose was then and is now to engage United Methodist clergy and lay people in a variety of activities to address the inadequacies of public education in Ohio, among them the way in which public education is funded in our state. Over the past several years Bishop Hopkins and Bishop Ough of the West Ohio Conference have had dialogues with a number of political leaders in the state, including an ongoing dialogue with Governor Strickland. In addition, a number of workshops and dialogues have been conducted in local churches across both conferences to make community and church leaders more aware of the problems that exist. Such efforts are continuing, among them the creation of these web pages which are designed to share the work of the Taskforce and to provide useful information from a variety of sources about public education in Ohio. |
