Generous United Methodists and people of good will across the country and around the world contributed more than $15 million directly to UMCOR for relief and recovery work in Haiti following the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake. Donations sent to conference treasurer offices, once processed, will add to the tally.
“The response of the church has been remarkable and generous,” said Bishop Joel Martinez, interim general secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries.
“We know much more is to come, both in financial support and the support of volunteers,” he added. This ongoing support will allow UMCOR “to be there in Haiti for the long haul,” Martinez underscored.
UMCOR has begun implementation of a five-year work plan that contemplates three phases of assistance to Haiti: emergency, recovery and rehabilitation.
Gifts to support UMCOR’s work can be made online at www.umcorhaiti.org. For gifts by mail, make checks payable to UMCOR and mail to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, N.Y. 10087. Please indicate Haiti Emergency, UMCOR Advance #418325 on the memo line of your check. One hundred percent of gifts made to this advance will help the people of Haiti.
