MESSAGE IN THE MOVIES
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow. Starring Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton.
This film tells the (mostly) true story of the hunt for Osama bin Laden, led by plucky and fearless CIA operative Maya (played by Jessica Chastain). According to this film, the eventual capture and killing of Osama bin Laden came as the result of Maya’s determination to stand up to the “good old boy” CIA system and plead her cause with conviction. In terms of plot, that’s about all there is to see in the 2½ hours of Zero Dark Thirty.
It’s told in the same kind of plainspoken fashion as The Hurt Locker (also directed by Kathyrn Bigelow and written by Mark Boal). Action scenes are filmed with handheld shaky cameras, which create a documentary feel to the story.
There are early scenes of waterboarding (simulated drowning) being used to get information from prisoners that is disturbing and upsetting. What steps are ethical when trying to get access to a greater evil? Zero Dark Thirty doesn’t preach to you about ethics, but lets you observe and think for yourself.
Apart from Chastain’s performance and director Bigelow’s expert filmmaking, there really isn’t all that much to Zero Dark Thirty. I liked the film, but I didn’t love it. This is what I call a spinach movie. It is so self-important you are sure that it must be good for you. It’s really not all that great, but it demands your attention.
Three halos: An impressive recreation of recent history, with another great performance from Jessica Chastain.
Four pitchforks: Torture, terrorism, some swearing.
