Movie Review by Rev. Bruce Batchelor Glader

I enjoyed Soul Surfer for the way it told its inspiring tale of courage, family, and faith. This fact-based film tells the story of Bethany Hamilton (Robb), a 13-year-old accomplished amateur surfer from Hawaii who was ready to move up to the next level of competition when she was attacked by a shark in 2003, losing her left arm in the process.  The media was surprised to discover that Bethany was determined to return to surfing, but it would take much hard work and determination.  Fortunately, Bethany had surfer parents (Quaid and Helen Hunt), supportive brothers, a close friend who was also an accomplished athlete (Lorraine Nicholson), and a strong Christian faith.

One of the first scenes shows the Hamilton family in church worshiping together, and Bethany is involved in her youth group, led by Sarah Hill (played by country singer Carrie Underwood).  The group is planning a mission trip to Mexico (which Bethany opts out of at the last minute after she is sponsored for a big competition).  The Bible teachings that Bethany has learned (including Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”) will serve as a foundation for her courageous recovery.

The film is geared for a family audience, so there is no swearing, alcohol or drug use.  That’s fine with me, but I would have liked to have seen a bit more about the Hamilton family, including what Bethany’s dad did for a living.  If we are to believe Soul Surfer, the Hamilton family existed solely to support Bethany in her athletic endeavors.

The surfing scenes are exciting and well-filmed, with a combination of live action and impressive CGI work.

Bethany’s attitude towards a mean-spirited rival (Sonya Balmores Chung) is kind hearted and understanding, as she shows Christ-like love to her enemy. And, during the closing credits, you get to see film of the real Bethany Hamilton thanking Jesus for being her savior.

Soul Surfer is a faith-based film that is inspiring and entertaining.

Pitchfork/Halo Ratings:
Five halos

An uplifting story about perseverance and faith.

One pitchfork
For a mean shark and an attack scene that will be too intense for most children under 12.
