Event Raises Funds to Provide Hope for the
Children in Africa
Despite muddy fields and stormy weather, 140
soccer and basketball athletes helped raise more
than $3,000 for Nothing but Nets, a
campaign to eradicate malaria, a leading killer
of children in Africa. Visit the official

July 27, was sponsored by the East Ohio
Conference of The United Methodist Church. The
University of Akron and the City of Green were
major contributors to the event.
“An African proverb states that ‘It takes a
village to raise a child.”’ Today, in the midst
of fun and with the help of numerous volunteers,
we are able to raise enough money to send over
300 mosquito nets that will literally save the
lives of children around the world,” said
Jessica Vargo, one of the organizers of the
event.
Seventeen soccer and 15 basketball teams
participated. The results are as follows:

other for the championship – their game ended in
a tie which was decided in a “sudden death”
playoff.
