Bishop Sally Dyck returns to Ohio for book signing, Jan. 14
“There is hope for the earth when we live the way of Jesus,” says Bishop Sally Dyck, bishop of the Minnesota United Methodist Annual Conference and co-author of A Hopeful Earth: Faith, Science, and the Message of Jesus (with Sarah Ehrman; Abingdon Press, 2010).
Dyck, whose ministry as a United Methodist clergyperson began in East Ohio, will greet readers and sign copies of the book on Jan. 14, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at United Methodist Church of the Redeemer, 2420 S. Taylor Rd., Cleveland Heights.
A Hopeful Earth asserts that when it comes to the natural environment, science and faith reach the same conclusions. Scientific warnings about the destruction of the earth through pollution and abuse are consistent with biblical themes of caring for God’s creation, compassion, and the dangers of greed and selfish consumption. Jesus’ teachings and science both alert people to greater responsibility toward their use of the earth.
Control and aggressive use of natural resources is also inextricably tied to poverty and international conflict, Dyck and Ehrman demonstrate in the book.
“There is really a creation crisis underway, and those of use with a religious bent really are called to stand up for the planet God gave us,” says popular author and environmentalist Bill McKibben. “This is a powerful and plainspoken book, drawing on the best Wesleyan tradition, to make the case for why we need to take strong action now.”
