Gambling a Problem? Help is Available!
Recent debate about gambling casinos in Ohio has raised awareness and mobilized Christians throughout the state. The possibility of a casino in our “backyard” has polarized both the gambling and the anti- gambling forces.
One side extols the benefits to the community, the other laments the problems it will create if and when casinos come, and “they will come!”
While we await the perceived destruction that the casinos will bring, many are blind to the reality that gambling is currently here, no more than 5 minutes away from most of us. Many communities in eastern Ohio have experienced illegal gambling as part of the culture for well over 100 years.
Racetracks, bingo, carnival games and charity events have been a part of life since our childhood. Ohio charity gambling proceeds exceeded 1 billion dollars in 2009. Since the 1970’s the lottery options have continually increased (scratch offs, the number, the 4 digit, the 5 digit, Bingo, Keno, Mega million, Powerball , etc.). Currently “games of skill” computer parlors, and online casinos and card parlors attract thousands daily. Off shore sports books can be accessed by phone.
It is estimated that there are currently 20-25 thousand individuals in eastern Ohio presently suffering what appears to be an addiction to gambling. Most are not getting help.
“The current discussions must center on how to help those who are already suffering negative affects of out of control gambling, not the morality of “to gamble or not to gamble!”
Meridian Community Care in Youngstown has been charged with the task of developing treatment options for gamblers and their families, as well as creating an awareness that gambling addiction is not “something that happens only in Las Vegas.”
Since 2001 we have presented information and trainings on gambling problems to professionals, families, and interested community persons. We are at the forefront in shaping state and local policy related to problem gambling treatment and educational services. With the assistance of conference and district staff we are attempting to reach into the Christian community and church leadership to help people become aware of the risks, signs, and available help for those affected by out of control gambling pathologies.
