Reading is Fundamental

A book that sat unused on a shelf now engages the mind of a child.  Thanks to the generosity of East Ohio churches more than 34 children in Lorain, Ohio see the world differently today.  They are just the beginning of the story.  Who knows how many others will have their lives altered, all because of the kindness of strangers.

Lorain Faith United Methodist Church (Firelands District) recently held a book fair.  More than 1,000 books were donated by parishioners at the church as well as Westlake UMC, Rockport UMC, Park Avenue UMC and others throughout East Ohio.

On the day of the book fair the church also created a small art fair by displaying pictures the children had drawn of their favorite books.  Clowns were on hand for entertainment and adults read stories to the children on the church lawn.

“The kids learned something about God and the church without us ever preaching a word to them,” said Pastor Karen Hollingsworth.  “They learned that God welcomes them.  They were greeted not once, not twice but numerous times.  Members of the congregation smiled at the kids and said ‘We are so happy that you are here.’  They were genuinely happy to see the kids and the kids knew that.”

Lorain City Schools lag near the bottom of the state’s rating system.  Lorain Faith UMC is attempting to change that by nurturing a relationship with the neighborhood children and with Garfield Elementary to promote a love of reading. 

The book fair was just the beginning.  The church also passed out books as part of its annual Trunk or Treat event.

Garfield Elementary School principal Barb Kapucinski has been impressed with the outpouring of support.  “This is a great beginning.  This is so very important to form a relationship between the church and school.”
