Called to Serve
By Rick Wolcott
“I need to call Grandma to ask if I can use her garage.”
“Why?”
“I want to have a garage sale, so I need a garage.”
Tammy was surprised to learn that her daughter Bree wanted to raise money for Flat Rock Homes so “they could get the stuff they need.”
Bree had visited Flat Rock in July and fell in love with some of the kids there. Now she wanted to help. Shortly after her visit, Bree started to work her magic. She made personal pleas to friends and family, created posters and she even stood up in front of her congregation at Willard First United Methodist Church (Firelands District) to ask for assistance.
The September 3rd garage sale raised $600. With the money, Bree was able to buy three brand new wheelchairs for the residents at Flat Rock. But Bree wasn’t done.
She returned to Flat Rock Homes on December 7 with her mom, Tammy, and dad, Brian, to wrap Christmas gifts for the residents. Bree made sure the family did not come empty handed. They did their own Christmas shopping for the children and brought the gifts with them.
Bree was a wrapping dynamo. Gifts of all shapes and sizes were selected, wrapped and stacked…waiting to be opened by children at least twice Bree’s age.
When asked how it made her feel to be helping other people, Bree said a mouthful with just one word.
“Happy,” said the 6 year-old, grinning from ear to ear.
