A Message from the Director of Camp Asbury

When I was a child, my grandfather—I called him Pop-pop—traveled from Philadelphia with my grandmother for a week-long visit every October. By hand, during the week of his visit, Pop-pop “turned over” our large backyard garden in neat rows, working in the fall leaves as he went. Pop-pop was building the soil. He taught me that the promise of spring and summer depends on the careful preparations and the hard work we make in earlier seasons. When we work at nature’s pace our labor can have a cumulative positive effect. The best way to assure an abundant summer harvest is to care for the soil in the fall.

Now I’m “Pop-pop” to my own grandchildren. My Pop-pop’s love of gardening still lives in me. I’m the grandchild who received Pop-pop’s spading fork and every time I use it I think how Pop-pop connected me to the earth. Pop-pop demonstrated his love for me by sharing gardening with me. I understand how important it is to care for the soil.

Soil is the precious skin of our planet. Soil is the bridge between all terrestrial life and the inorganic. Formed from the weathering of bedrock beneath our feet over thousands of years and enriched by the residue of life. Life depends on fertile soil.

It’s not surprising to me that Jesus taught us how much God loves us using lessons and parables about soil.

Camp Asbury’s summer 2020 theme is “the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.” This summer at Camp Asbury we’ll explore our connections with the soil from stories in scripture and experiences at camp. We will touch the earth.

When I close my eyes and picture Camp Asbury, I see and hear groups of people scattered across hilly meadows, shouting and splashing at the lakefront, kids sloshing up the creek, glowing campfires from “homes in the woods,” arms waving and loud singing on wagon rides, screams of exhilaration from the giant swing, people looking up in awe at the milky way. Summer camp is filled with holy moments that make me want to offer thanks and praise. And it all depends on the good earth that God has created and the fertile soil that sustains life. Genesis tells us that God makes us out of dirt. We are connected to God’s love and we are connected to the earth.

I can’t wait for another summer to arrive. See you at camp!

.- Bill Graham, Camp Asbury director

Summer Camp 2020

Every overnight camp and day camp program is built on an age-appropriate selection of classic camp activities. These classic activities are continually given creative twists by Asbury staff. Some activities every week are selected by camper choice.

The heart of Camp Asbury’s program is small group community experienced with peers of similar age-level. Campers in all day camp and residential programs live and participate in camp activities as co-ed family groups. A family group usually consists of the combination of a boys’ cabin and a girls’ cabin or, in day camp, by age level registrations. Typically a small group consists of 6-12 campers with a male and female counselor.

As a church-related camp, faith formation is a core component of all of Camp Asbury’s programs. Each small group engages in a daily interactive Bible study guided by its counselors. Daily Bible study explores the theme “the Earth is the Lord’s.” We will be sharing stories and activities that deepen our appreciation of soil. We’ll learn how we can care for the soil. In addition to Bible study, there are also a number of opportunities for the entire camp community to share in the worship of God outdoors as a large group.

Overnight Campers
To add spice and variety to a week of camp, Asbury adds a weekly theme. No two weeks of summer are alike. Campers in all overnight programs participate in the camp-wide special themed activities of the week. Weekly themes enhance, but do not dominate, a camper’s experience. An introduction to 2020 weekly themes follows program descriptions.

Day Campers
Every week follows a consistent schedule. Within this reliable framework, specialized activities and camper choices are changed each week. During the course of the summer, day campers are invited to explore Camp Asbury’s whole 450-acre site. Each week is a new adventure. Day camp is not organized around the weekly themes of residential camp. One week of day camp incorporates an experience at Sand Hill Stable.

High School Campers
Leadership development is the focus of Camp Asbury’s high school programming. Mentoring younger campers, servant-style leadership, outdoor living skills and group facilitation skills are highlighted. Asbury’s senior high programs are designed to help campers grow in self-knowledge, courage, confidence and resiliency. Star Gazers, Mounted Archery, Crooked River Riders and Buckeye Backpack join the list of favorites for senior high campers.

Horse Program
Camp Asbury partners with Sand Hill Stable in Mantua, Ohio. For Summer 2020 Camp Asbury offers Beginner (2 stable visits per week) and Beginner II (5 stable visits per week) instruction for grades 4-12. Customized instruction is available at the stable for riders who demonstrate a higher skill level. Horse programs operate during five weeks of Camp Asbury’s summer program. Camp Asbury provides transportation to stable sessions. At the stable, learn to ride, control and groom a horse. Horse program campers are asked to describe their riding experience and skill on Asbury’s “Get Acquainted” form. Each camper’s horseback ability will be confirmed by Sand Hill Stable instructors and their stable experience tailored to their ability.

Alumni
Whether you’re a former camper or an Asbury Summer Staff alum, Camp Asbury values its ongoing connection with you. You and your family are invited to share new experiences and create fresh memories at Camp Asbury. Check out Family Weekend, August 7-9, 2020 at the end of this brochure. Camp Asbury also welcomes staff alumni, trained as counselors within the last three years, to work as trained summer volunteers.
