Lavert Stuart

Lavert Stuart is the assistant director of Music and Arts and the organist at University Circle United Methodist Church (North Coast District). 

Well known as a church musician, Stuart has served in various capacities in a number of Protestant denominations during his career. He shepherded the Sutphen School of Music through a renaissance during his 25 years of leadership as the school’s director, and has been a conductor/pianist for several theater productions at Karamu and the Ensemble Theater.

Stuart has performed in the United States, Bermuda, and Haiti as a solo organist, a pianist, and as a church musician. He has presented organ recitals at Rockefeller Chapel of the University of Chicago, Old West Church of Boston, and at Cathedral de St. Trinite in Port au Prince, Haiti.

He began his musical training in the Cleveland Public Schools and completed his studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.  Stuart has studied with such musicians as John Powell, Elizabeth Clarke, Marceline Hawk, Mary Rautenburg, Eugene Wickstrom, Edward Mondello, Daniel Pinkham, Yuko Hayashi, and Karl Paukert.
