SEXUAL ETHICS POLICY FOR CLERGY
As part of caring for the clergy covenant, the East Ohio Board of Ministry carries the responsibility of presenting a quadrennial workshop on the topic of healthy clergy boundaries and principled sexual ethics.
Healthy boundaries sustain personal and ministerial relationships and bring joy to ministry. Understanding boundaries in the multiple ministry roles is crucial for a healthy and safe faith community. Becky Posey Williams, the senior director of sexual ethics and advocacy for the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women, will be in our conference in September to guide pastors through conversations about clergy boundaries.
This training will address the awareness of power and vulnerability in ministerial relationships and explore dual relationships and the challenges they present within the Church as well as through social media. The topic will be considered from the ministry setting, but not limited to rural, urban, full time, and part time. Emphasis will be placed on the violation of boundaries which result in the chargeable offense of sexual misconduct. Participants will be encouraged to develop individual plans of self-care which reflect their lives, spiritually, emotionally, socially, and physically.
“Integrity in Ministry: Boundaries and the Importance of Self-Care” will be offered on four dates and at four locations:
Participants may choose any of the dates or locations for participation. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the program is 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
The training is required of all clergy under appointment in, or through, the East Ohio Conference. This includes full-time or part-time elders, deacons, local pastors and those in extension ministry, as well as other people who are the primary leaders of a local church. Exceptions to this rule must be requested through the clergy person’s district superintendent.
Clergy can use this link to register for the training: https://clergyethicstraining2019.eventbrite.com.
Registration will be open through August 31. There is a $12 registration fee which includes materials, lunch and other supplies for the day. The event fee for walk-in attendees is $15.
