GENERAL CONFERENCE

General Book of Discipline

The Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters is tasked with developing a global Book of Discipline, called the General Book of Discipline.

General Conference delegations have committed to providing a way for leaders in each annual conference of The United Methodist Church to provide feedback to the Standing Committee regarding the current draft.

Review the Draft of Part VI of the General Book of Discipline (GBOD)
You are invited and encouraged to click the Review and Offer Comments link below to offer feedback on the seven chapters of the proposed Part VI, which shall contain what is connectionally essential for a worldwide church. Invitations have also been extended to specific groups in East Ohio to review a particular chapter(s) of the draft that pertains to their specific ministry setting.

All responses to the Review Survey received by November 30 will be summarized and submitted to the Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters on behalf of the East Ohio Conference delegation.

  • GBOD Part VI Chapter 1 – The Local Church
  • GBOD Part VI Chapter 2 – Ministry of the Ordained
  • GBOD Part VI Chapter 3 – The Superintendency
  • GBOD Part VI Chapter 4 – The Conferences
  • GBOD Part VI Chapter 5 – Administrative Order
  • GBOD Part VI Chapter 6 – Church Property
  • GBOD Part VI Chapter 7 – Judicial Administration

Review and Offer Comments of GBOD Part VI.

Worldwide Regionalization

How does The United Methodist Church witness to the one gospel of Jesus Christ within 130 contextually unique countries worldwide?

The Worldwide Regionalization Plan proposes the creation of nine regional conferences – four in Africa, three in Europe, one in the Philippines and one in the U.S. – all possessing the ability to pass legislation that is missionally appropriate and effective in their own regions in addition to adapting the Book of Discipline.

The package of eight petitions submitted by the Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters was approved by the General Conference, April 23-May 3, 2024. The petition containing Constitutional Amendments must now be ratified by annual conferences across the connection over the next several months. To aid in this process, the Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters is partnering with the Council of Bishops, Connectional Table and members of the Christmas Covenant to provide resources to educate annual conference members around what Worldwide Regionalization does and does not do.
