RRR - Streaming on Netflix

halo halo halo pitchfork pitchfork Rated PG-13

Directed by S.S. Rajamouli
Starring N.T. Rama Rao, Jr., Ram Charan
In Telugu, Hindi, and English, with subtitles

This film from India appeared briefly in theaters in April (where my wife and I saw it originally). The three Rs in the title not only represent the themes of Rise, Roar, Revolt but are the initials of the director and his two leading men. It is loosely based on the exploits of two rebel heroes who fought against Great Britain in the 1920s (but never actually met one another). The story begins with the abduction of a little Indian girl by the British and the exploits of Bheem (NTR) as he travels to Delhi to rescue her. Along the way, he meets and mixes things up with Raju (Ram), a police officer working for the British. In time these two will strike up a bromance and join forces in incredibly creative fashion. RRR features a cast of hundreds and includes battle scenes, jungle animals, comedy, romance, action, and a memorable midpoint dance off (“Naatu Naatu”).

RRR is three hours of endless fun and highly recommended.

Note: This film comes from the Telugu language film industry (known as Tollywood) and yet Netflix is only releasing it in Hindi, the language of Bollywood. Since the film was shown in both languages when it appeared in theaters, Netflix did not even have to dub this movie in order to honor its country of origin.

Halo and Pitchfork Rating:

Three halos: People working together against a common enemy – British imperialists.
Two pitchforks: Crazy animal fighting; kidnapping; racism; cartoon violence.
