Black History Month

Continuing the Work

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the contributions of Black Americans, reflect on our shared history, and commit ourselves to the ongoing work of racial justice. As United Methodists, we are called to stand against racism. Our Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church and our Book of Resolutions affirm our commitment to racial justice and reconciliation. Our East Ohio Conference has been engaged in this work – and we encourage pastors, congregations, and faith communities to use this time to deepen your understanding and take tangible steps toward justice.

Resources for Engaging in This Important Work

  • "All in God’s Image: A Celebration of Black History and Diversity" curriculum:

    • Download the “All In God’s Image” resource that provides Sunday school lessons for children, equipping them with historical knowledge and a theological framework for racial justice.

  • General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR) Black History Month resources:

    • Less Well-Known Historical Figures
    • Black History Month for Kids
    • Do’s and Don’ts of Black History Month
    • 29 Ways to Participate in Black History Month
    • A Call to Justice: A Letter from the General Secretary

  • General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) article and Resources:

    • Black History Month Reading List
    • 33 Children's Books for Black History Month
    • Black History and Voting Rights
    • The Blessing and Burden of Being Black in America

  • Discipleship Ministries

    • Worship Resources for Black History Month 2025

  • Research and highlight local Black history in your community:

    • Are there historically Black churches, leaders, or movements that have shaped your town? Opportunities like the Cleveland Civil Rights Trail that features Cory United Methodist Church or the Oberlin Underground Railroad Center are great learning opportunities to visit with your family or a small group.

  • Read, listen to, and learn from Black authors, theologians, scholars, and historians:

    • A great starting point is Fishing Differently: Ministry Formation in the Marketplace by Rev. Dr. Sidney Williams, Jr., East Ohio’s 2023 Black Theologian Day speaker.
    • Watch the video series “EOC Black Clergy Share Their Experiences of Race and Ministry.”

  • Explore the Black College Fund & HBCU Legacy

    • The United Methodist Church has long supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through the Black College Fund. HBCUs have played a critical role in educating Black leaders, pastors, and scholars in the face of racial exclusion. Learning about and supporting these institutions is one way to honor Black history.
    • The Black College Fund
    • The Black College Fund, Resolution 4033 in The Book of Resolutions
    • Watch the video series “HBCU Students Share their Experience during Annual Conference Sessions.”
