BISHOP'S OFFICE

Easter 2017

Every day we wake up to the miracle of the resurrection.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is more than a fact and a promise. It is more than a triumph over tragedy, the conquering of the cross and a victory over the grave … it is all of that and more. Resurrection is about transformation. It is a life, our life, being transformed and renewed by the power of Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, at work in us and in the world. The Resurrection story is our story, which sustains our living and gives us hope and joy.

Frederick Buechner captured it well when he said: “resurrection means the worst thing is never the last thing.” No matter the disappointment, pain, set-backs or struggle – Easter reminds us that God is always working for our good and has the final word. No matter how dark, tragic or hopeless a circumstance or situation might be, the worst day or the worst thing is never the last thing.

Resurrection means that it is possible for me and for you to be transformed more and more, day by day, into the likeness of Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God!

Life is punctuated with pain and disappointment but let us not shrink in fear and doubt and succumb to the evil and injustice that is so pervasive in our communities and world. As an Easter people, let us strive to live into the resurrection power and life we have in Christ.

Let us “Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ – that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.”  Let us pursue our new life in Christ by sharing the love and grace of Jesus Christ, working for peace and justice and serving the poor and marginalized. Remember, every day is a miracle of the resurrection! Christ is Risen! Halleluiah!

I leave you with these words from William and Gloria Gaither’s Because He Lives, one of my favorite hymns:
